I’m excited to share with you the incredible new website for National History Day Arkansas, an academic program for elementary and secondary school students. I’m especially thrilled to have worked on this project because NHDA works through the University of Central Arkansas, which is my alma mater (Go Bears!).
About National History Day Arkansas
National History Day is a nationwide program with chapters in every state. Students choose a topic based on the annual theme and conduct “extensive research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews, and historic sites.” The purpose of the new website was two-fold. First, the old site lived within the University of Central Arkansas’s (UCA) main website and didn’t offer the facilitators the flexibility and space to provide the required information. And second, the website houses all the essential information students and teachers alike need to know to participate and be successful.
About the Site
This website was a huge success because of the incredible dedication and hard work of my client. The entire website (all 26 pages) was written completely from scratch. The client wanted to use the new website as a fresh start. The content development inspired a lot of the components and features of the site.
The site also features a standardized interior page layout with a sidebar navigation, allowing users to dive deep into multiple sections of the website without feeling lost or disoriented. Due to the volume of important content, getting the user experience right was paramount to the site’s long-term success.
In addition to building the site, I was also tasked with developing the design’s style guide and navigation system. The client and I collaborated extensively on the colors, button designs, font family, and menus. A lot of strategic and smart thinking went into this site, and I think it shows!
